Updated AVG Free Edition a while ago and on the same day I stopped being bale to open Outlook Express, which is driving me crazy as I have so much information on there that I NEED.
I've just reinstalled Office 2003 and it still won't work. Message I get is:
Cannot start MS Office Outlook. Unable to open the Office window. THe set of foldes could not be opend. The sercer is not available. contact your administrator if this condition persists.

I can't open it at all to fiddle about with it and am tearing my hair out.
Would be sooo grateful if anyone can help a technophobe out!

have you checkec out the FAQ on the AVG website ? Or googled for AVG and Outlook Express ?

ooh, you're talking about 2 different things.. ...Outlook comes with Office 2003 and Outlook Express comes with Windows of varying versions...

The 'can't open the set of folders- the server is not available message' seems to point at Outlook being configured against an exchange server.. ...which would be odd for home..

Anyhoo, if it was outlook you were using before, right click on the Outlook icon on your desktop, click on properties and then make sure all your mail settings are correct..

If you were using outlook express before, click on Start, then Run and type
msimn
then click ok... ..this should start outlook express and will rule out shafted shortcuts...
...sorry if none of this makes sense.. ...slap me and I'll try again...

Sorry for confusion, I was using OUtlook Express before but changed to Office OUtlook a couple of years ago but still get mixed up (am no use with technical things )

I've googled AVG and Outlook and searched the AVG website to no avail.
It's Outlook I'm using but I've got the professional version, does that make a difference?
When I right click on OUtlook then properties it only gives me 'general' and 'shortcut' tabs, none of which I can alter!
It's driving me mad as it has all my contacts and really important emails on it!

Hi sounds like Outlook got confused and has lost the location of your messages. Ok you will need to locate your message store.

  1. Search all files and folders including hidden files and folders for a *.pst file
  1. Once you've located this file in the search then right click on this file and choose the option to "Open this location" this will take you to the location of your PST file this contains all your messages and contacts. Write this location down on a bit of paper you will need this later do not copy or delete anything here. It should read something like C:\documentsandsettings\user\indentities write down the full location or copy it to a text file.
  1. Then open Outlook and when it says unable to open folders it should give you a browse option in the file menu (at the top of the screen) Then browse to the location of your PST file using the location carefully written on your bit of paper.

This should then sort out Outlook but this is a bit of a reoccuring problem - Cheers MS.

Good luck!!

did you uninstall the old version od AVG before you updated with the new one? I had the same problem with my wireless connection - the pc was unable to detect it. I uninstalled AVG, then installed the updated version and it worked fine after that hth.
