Spotify in the car?

How can I do this? Somehow attach my phone to the car radio? I'd like the sound to come out of the car speakers as my phone is tiny and tinny. I'd just like to be able to play what I want in the car rather than have the radio on all the time. Really out of my depth with this stuff - please helP!

We play Spotify in our car. You need two things:

A Spotify account on your phone, ideally a Premium one (£10 a month) so you can download playlists and play offline (less likely to cut out or stutter)
A way to connect the phone to your in-car music system, either a USB port OR a Bluetooth connection.

Hook up the phone (by USB cable or Bluetooth), select the right input on your car system ("Aux" or Bluetooth), start playing the tracks on your phone - hey presto.

I've tried this, Cointreau, but it says 'You need an internet connection' when I try and put Spotify on in the car. Can't get access to any of my downloaded stuff! Any tips?

As I suspected, it looks like you need Spotify Premium. You download all your playlists onto your phone before you leave the house, and can then use Spotify WITHOUT an internet connection. You have to "refresh" the phone every 30 days by downloading again, but apart from that you're good to go.

It's £10 a month. I first got Premium because I use my phone for running music; also, all my family use Spotify, and they were constantly changing the music and interfering with my listening! If you've downloaded the playlists and gone offline, no-one can interrupt.

Nope, I have Spotify Premium! Just checked: "Your subscription will automatically renew on 26/09/2016 and you'll be charged £9.99." I took it out because I was sick of all the ads ...

First thing to try would be playing Spotify on your phone without an internet connection. Have you downloaded your playlists? Then go into Spotify settings and select Offline Mode. If you switch off the wifi and 3G on your phone, you should still able to play your music. Let me know if that works.

Sorry, Cointreau, meant to reply to this. OK, I can get the music on the phone now, without an internet connection, but the sound is still coming out of the phone directly, rather than being channelled through the car speakers, despite the USB cable being attached! Any ideas at all, or am I just destined to remain a complete Luddite with tinny music in the car?

Hmm....you're getting there! Presuming your car music system will accept different inputs, you need to select where the speakers are getting their signal from, IYSWIM. I'm not sure how you do that. On mine, I select "media", then choose DAB, FM, Bluetooth or Aux.

Does your car have Bluetooth?

We just use an iPhone cable, our car has a USB port. In our previous car we had to use an FM Transmitter which plugs from cigarette lighter in car to headphone jack in phone.

What kind of car do you have? I have a ford and I connect through Bluetooth, which you have to pair it with the car and then play but sometimes it still plays through the phone and says on my phone devices available and I can choose "ford audio " an AUX lead could work just plug it into the earphone jack and put the stereo onto AUX mode

I haven't tried through the USB port i believe, which would be the charging port? As far as I know for IPhones that's more for music in the music app not Spotify

What kind of car and phone do you have? I have a vauxhall and the USB only works with iPods/iPhones, for Android you need to use an Aux cable (annoyingly!). It works for Spotify. Worth a try?
