Correcting/editing text on iPad Air

Sometimes I can just leave my finger on/near the text I want to correct and it works, I get the magnifying glass and I can move the cursor where I want it and make the correction.

But increasingly often, that doesn't happen. I get the Select/whatever options in the black box instead. Or the word is automatically selected with the blue bars on either end.

I try double tapping. I get rid of the keyboard and try again. No, it makes no difference.

How on earth is this supposed to work? Why does it work sometimes and others not? How am I meant to just shove a cursor into the middle of a word and correct the spelling, etc? It's very annoying.

Not an Air, but on my iPad I tap my finger on and off again quite quickly.
Or, if I get that black box of select/copy etc, I just ignore the box and do whatever I want now that the cursor is where I want it.

Thanks. The stupid thing is it's not even consistent!

I shall try that, Sister, though afaic remember, it doesn't respond to your second suggestion.
