Can I use US bought old kindle and Ipod in UK without transformer?

Just returned from visiting family in US who kindly gave us an old kindle fire and an ipod touch 5. Can I just plug the charger cable into a UK plug or do I need a transformer or special plug so that I can use devices sold in US market in UK? Assume I am an idiot and you would be right

The power supplies are almost certainly multi-voltage, but given that a proper UK-approved USB power supply is about five quid, just buy one.
