iPad keeps saying storage is full

It's my dd's iPad but I use it for fb and mums net.

It's a old ipad 2, we have had it for a few years, in the past I have stored quite a few photos on it and had many apps for dd. A few months ago it started telling me that storage was full, I deleted loads of photos and loads of apps, it now only has around 20 photos stored and 5 apps ( nothing like it used to have ) but every time I try and take a photo or add a new app it says 'storage full', it's getting annoying as it used to store loads and now it hardly stores anything.

What's happening?

Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage

How much space does it say you have there?

BlueKarou · 16/03/2015 18:26

Mine tends to keep any photos I think I've deleted for 30 days after said deleting, so it might be that there are still lingering images.

But yeah, what Three said. That'll point you at where the storage is being used up.

It says I'm using 12gb, ipad is 16gb. I keep getting a random message pop up saying ' storage almost full' when I'm not even attempting to add more.

What is your 12 gb being used for? Are there apps you don't use?

Roseformeplease · 16/03/2015 19:29

Mine was doing this but had hardly anything on it. Went to Apple Shop and they got me to delete and restore from Cloud back up. Apparently, over time, I had got some corrupted data. All sorted! Or you can factory re-set and then put apps back on.

My daughter has minecraft and 2 more games, I have mums net, fb and Amazon, that's all the apps I have other than the ones that are already on there ( camera, email etc..). I used to have 3 pages of apps on there but deleted them, used to have 100's of photos but now hardly any.

Are there any software updates pending? My ipad auto downloads updates but then prompts to install. Perhaps there is an update waiting installation.

Have a look at the apps list, is there anything looking very large? iPlayer for example may have downloads that expire shortly,

Cindy34 · 17/03/2015 19:22

Mine has 2GB available. 10.8GB used. So whilst supposed to be 16GB in reality it is just under 13GB, presumably due to OS and temp storage allocation.

To use up 12GB I would expect quite a bit to be video, is there much video?

Cindy34 · 17/03/2015 19:24

The usage should show which apps are taking up most space, some games can be huge. It should also show things like video storage.

Seems strange that you have so few apps yet are using lots of space. Try to work out what sort of files are taking up the space.

Log out of iTunes and App Store, then log back in again. I had this and knew it wasn't right as I have the 64gb iPad air, Google told me it was videos/tv shows etc from iTunes that I had streamed rather than downloaded, but had left an imprint behind despite being saved in the cloud rather than on the device.

Connect your iPad up to iTunes on a computer.
That will show you what is taking up space on your iPad.....though chances are a large chunk of it will be 'other'.

If that's the case, google for ideas on removing it. There's no one size fits all fix, though removing browsing data and trimming down safari bookmarks can help.

Another option is to reset the device. Seems to work, try at your own risk (and be sure you have a backup first)
