Cheapest smart phone

Have been tasked with purchasing a smart phone for my mother, not an iPhone, fairly cheap, nothing too technical but a smart phone - any suggestions?

Perhaps the Moto G (1st gen) or Moto E ? Or a Samsung S3 mini? These are inexpensive but not the newest models.

Some of the newer smartphones are quite large - large enough for the (mostly male) reviewers to comment on handling concerns - so it's a good idea to check dimensions first if ordering online.

Anything from £10 (Samsung Galaxy Ace at Tesco) to £50 to £100...

On the Moto G front, seems (from DigitalSpy) that the 2013 Moto G model is now getting the latest Android Lollipop (v5) software install. That's well worth having, and if it means delaying purchase 2-3 months, it may be worth the wait. Certainly before signing a contract or buying in store, I'd ask the staff.

If they are unfamiliar, say you'll think about it. It might prod the networks into nudging Motorola to update UK phones with the latest Android earlier than they might otherwise do.

Moto g especially the 1st gen if memory not an issue or the latest if 4g and SD card needed. It's a gift at the price. Does all the real smart phone stuff.

The sainsburys huawei baby smart phone we are testing on the product testers thread isn't bad for the price at all, but I think it's probably a bit basic for adult use ( ideal for teens as it has slightly limited capabilities in some ways so automatically strangles their data use whilst not stopping them doing lots of other stuff, and with a big memory card is great as an MP3 player.
