Does DS need tablet?

I'm thinking about getting DS a tablet for xmas.

He currently plays on his Nintendo 3DSi, on my laptop (either Angry Birds, Minecraft or 'Friv' a games site) or on my phone (Angry Birds, Minecraft).

Does he need a tablet? He seems to think he does. And he tells me there are "some really cool games" on tablets, but surely we can get the same stuff on my phone/laptop?

I guess the only advantage I can see is that it's like having his own computer? It would have to be as cheap as possible too.

He'd love a Wii or XBox but no way can I afford these.

Raspberry Pi is a programmable computer for around £25, though it also needs a screen, keyboard and mouse.

They have a comprehensive web site, and there are Pi enthusiast groups all over the country.

how old is he?

As far as I'm aware any game or app you can get on an iPad you can get on an iPhone.

Sorry, forgot to say, he is 9. I wouldn't be getting an iPad, too expensive and i don't have an iPhone.

How interesting Ferguson, never heard of a Raspberry Pi before. It looks a little daunting tbh.

I wouldn't get a 9 year old a tablet (although I'm sure there are plenty who have them). He can play the same games on your phone or laptop. I'd be very concerned about internet safety issues.

I did however look at the raspberry pi for my 9 year old. I decided its maybe more for 11+.

You could try the hudl 2 from tesco which seems a popular option esp as you can use your vouchers towards it. Mine are getting mini iPads from family members as we know they are internet savvy. They will use them for usual apps, Netflix, iplayer etc plus the camera and video is good on them so it's all encompassing, plus of course the internet which they use safely all the time. They use iPads at school now which is why we gone down this route.

Mine monopolise the family ipad so am kind of forced to get them their own so I can use mine basically.

I want to introduce a number of web games for your entertainment and forget about illness :Friv3K; Friv2K

Have you looked at a hudl, these are from tesco and very reasonable plus if you shop there regularly you can use your club card points to buy it.
My daughter has one and I have downloaded a load of games she likes that are also on my iPad and it does work with mindcraft, animal jam etc. I also came across an app where I can control the hudl from my phone so I can turn it off and stop it working if she sneaks it up to bed with her. The app is www.techno-app.com
