If you had a 2009 macbook would you update from OS mavericks to Yosemite?

The mavericks os did practically ruin the macbook- soooo slow & wifi wouldn't work. Then the last big update fixed it pretty much.
I know I need a new battery & change to a solid state hd (bought extra 2gb of ram as an option when buying it)
But would running Yosemite totally kill it?

And similar to a poster on the iOS 8 thread I used to be a big fan of apple. After the wifi mavericks debacle I was so pissed off I got an android tablet instead of an iPad. Hrumph. And it's actually brilliant! My next phone will prob be android too.

Yosemite seems faster to me, so far, so go for it, I reckon. But I completely agree with you about Apple- I don't intend to buy a new one ever again, and the endless problems with updates to iOS make me laugh, while Android just gets better and better.

Oh that's interesting re faster. I didn't expect that. How old is your computer? I'm worried mine is just too ancient now

I've put it on a 2008 Mac Pro which is only just capable of running mavericks, and a HP ProBook (hackintosh nerdery)- it's better than mavericks so far

I haven't updated my old faithful white macbook, late 2009 yet for fear of killing it, it is a bit slow on mavericks and its only got 2gb of ram which is the bare minimum needed, so paying interest to this thread.

Prism, How much ram did your 2008 Mac Pro have because that seems to be the most critical thing?

6GB and a Xeon CPU. RAM is the thing- I wouldn't run anything later than 10.6 in 2GB.

Thanks, its plodding along on OSX 10.9.5 and is fairly slow but happy, so I think I shall leave it . To upgrade I would have to get more ram and probably other stuff, I'm not very techy and I only really use it for internet and emails, I don't really want to kill it as it is easier than my iPad for if I do want to do a document or letter and I do love my white macbook and hope it lives for many years yet

White MacBooks are fab. Dead easy to change the RAM and HD, not too cramped inside so they don't overheat, and generally nice to have around. Treat it to a solid state hard drive and it will keep you happy for years

I've done it with a mid 2009 MBP. No problems at all and seems fast enough. My mac only struggles with photos because I have 50,000 of them. Otherwise it copes fine with everything.

I have 8GB ram though.

I don't think Apple will help you should it all go wrong if you load it onto anything pre 2010. Something to do with crisis allocation.

I'd try it, as long as you have a back up plan should it ruin the laptop entirely.

I've a friend who can change the harddrive for me. Tho I want him to teach me I'm curious to see inside it.
Can I up the ram too? That's interesting. I bought the max possible at the time of purchase (2 or maybe 4?) but if I can increase it further that would be great.

Really interesting that Yosemite runs faster than mavericks. Totally didn't expect that. But I see you need to update iPhone to ios8 which I wasn't planning on doing. I've only got an 8gb 4s so I thought it would kill my iPhone.

My ancient MacBook seems slower, but then I only have 2gb ram so I'll increase that. The install of Yosemete is a bit scary though. Tip is to press cmd L so you can see the log doing something. Lots of people have had troubles with it freezing

I can't get the iMessage thing to work from my iPhone though - again seems a common problem

Some of the Yosemite stuff doesn't work if your Mac is older than mid 2011, Handsoff I think. I'm looking into SSD's and Ram at the moment but not sure I can afford it all, it looks like about £150 for both. I can afford a new Macbook even less, anyway I want a white one with a CD drive.

I upgraded my 16G 4s to iOS 8 and it don't seem to have made much difference to its performance but I can't use the iCloud drive because my Mac is not updated.
