What techy gadget for an in-techy pree-teen girl?

Dd wants a DS for her 12th birthday. Techy ds says that they are, or soon will be, obsolete.

Despite having two male geeks, we are a non-gaming family (apart from the ubiquitous Minecraft and an occasional Wii) and are quite strict about restricting Internet access.

What gadget can we get dd?

"In-techy"? I mean "non-techy".

Mine loved their iPods, music, books and games is preteen heaven.

I don't restrict the internet, never have, I don't see the point. Better to learn to be sensible when your young enough to listen, than do something stupid egged on by your mates at 13. And if they see the odd naked body or erect penis so what!

Are iPods always Internet enabled?

I don't think so on my iPhone and new iPods also run iso7 so I think they are the same you can go into general settings restrictions and block the web browser and block in ap purchases etc.

All I have set is demand password immediately as it's very easy to press buy on another song or album while browsing the store.

So I've no idea what the built in filtering is like.
