Hi all

My laptop is just about to give up the ghost and so I need a new computer. I wad tempted by a mac but having read other threads on here, I might be paying a lot of money for something I don't need.

We have more space now we have moved house so I'd like a pc rather than a laptop I think. I'm an academic and work use pc's not macs. I will be working on stuff at work (word processing mainly) and then continuing at home.

Where do people buy computers? is it just pc world or are there other, more cost effective places? I know a little bit about computers but not enough not to get ripped off on ebay for example.

Can anyone recommend a good pc?

All help appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Direct from manufacturer. If you want to buy in a store, then try JohnLewis - they sell some desktop PCs.

Lenovo and Asus seem to be brands which are doing quite well now. Dell is worth a look.

Many companies have exited the market over recent years. See www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/feb/06/sony-vaio-exit-pc-market-analysis

Either buy directly from manufacturer with home pick up warranty or as recommended in JL - their customer service is worth paying extra for.

I got a laptop for my DD at JL last year.
2 years ago I got Lenovo from ebuyer
