I have spent ages googling and trying out what is suggested (sync playlists and transfer entire music library) but only one item has transferred .... can I only transfer music bought from the istore ? How can I put things into playlists? maybe I need to play everything on my pc this morning, since the only song which transferred was the most recently played, and that was one of the options ...

Are they .mp3 files?

You could try using a media app. We have a external network drive which comes with an app which lets us save content to the ipad for playback later.

I have just tried VLC for iOS.
It can stream files from Dropbox. You can transfer files via iTunes, a web browser, or from Dropbox. Think it also supports other Cloud services like GoogleDrive.

So if you need music or video on your ipad when you do not have a net connection, you can use VLC to store the files and playback.
It is a free app, so worth a play. Also try DropBox if you don't have that already, it is also Free and gives you online storage.

So many things I don't understand there .... off to research 'media app' 'VLc' and 'dropbox' Blush

Hi, it may be worth looking at this youtube vid from about 2mins as it details how to do it. Best of luck.

Open iTunes then go to file, add file to library. Browse and find the music you want to add and select. It should then be added to your iTunes library, so when you plug your ipad in to iTunes and sync the music will be added to your ipad.
That's the way I do it.

I haven't done it for ages, but I'm sure it's like snoozle says very simple, once you have your CDs as MP3 files.

Only iTunes thing that is simple - spent ages last night trying to get my account to understand my main email address will be changing and my iTunes pass word has changed!

Seemed to be rocket science for iTunes to link everything back together and let me update stuff.
