can apple really block 3rd party cables from working?

Ipad air with ios 7...

Bought 3 cables off ebay. First work for several weeks noe stopped, and the 2nd new one has stopped charging after I disconnected and reconnected it (fine to 62% or the charge).

Am I going to have to fork out megabuck for a new one?

Cheap cables are just crap. I've owned an iPod since 2001 and multiple pods/pads since and have bought about a million chargers and cables, not one has lasted more than a month. Best cables I've had are the Amazon basics usb to lightning cable for about £11, assuming that's the cable you're after. Very robust.
