Does it see the SID?
does it prompt for password?

What stage does it get to?

hi thanks for responding

it finds the network then when you click on it it responds with a request for a password. on ce the password is put in it thinks for a while and shows as 'connecting' before displaying thr network is not responding message

No idea for that particular model, but have you tried the Amazon comments page? Some time ago I was looking for a phone for myself and was considering a particular Sony model, but many of the comments warned against it because of the difficulties getting online via WiFi. Then one poster came online with a quick fix (apparently one even the Sony hotline people didn't know) and after that all was well. There was one particular quite obscure setting that you have to change from default and that just stopped the WiFi from working on that one model. Might be something similar.

will try that now thank you

no nothing particularly on Amazon(apart from confirmation of what I suspected -that this wasnt a good choice of model-DD insisted on it_

Check it is not auto capitalising the first character of the password.

Reboot the router, sometimes the DHCP gets confused.

Alas probably not much help but you never know.

If you know of a local cafe who have a Hot Spot try connecting there. Most don't need a password and if it won't connect, it is more likely to be yr phone. Best of luck

Or a local Asda - they have free EE wireless in bigger stores. You should be prompted to enter your mobile number (so they can text some code to type in on the web page).

If you get their web page it shows the wireless is working. After that, it may be down to how the phone handles wireless encryption keys, and the type of encryption used.

If it works on neither your own, nor some other (friend or relative, if not a 'public' one), then worth using a helpline.

I've seen comments about people buying "brand new" but finding a phone had been used (eg having another person's wedding video recording on the microSD card in the phone, when O2 said it was new), and it's not impossible, if it had been used, for someone to have perhaps changed some settings (such as fixed IP address rather than DHCP) but to be fair, I've no idea how easy or difficult this would be on a Win 8 mobile, as I use Android.

Try the WPS buttons/setting to connect if both router and phone have them?
