Uninstalling Programmes of from my Laptop

Another incredibly boring question, but how do I uninstall unwanted programmes from my laptop. I want to tidy it up a bit, but don't really want to install an unknown uninstall programme (of which there appear to be thousands).

Thanks to the sound advice received earlier, I have managed to uninstall Norton and have moved to AVG. But this was a big deal as I am not terribly great at all things computer!!

Assuming a Windows based laptop, then go into Control Panel, find Programs, then Uninstall Programs. Windows will then list all the individual program uninstallers.

The question would be, how do you know what programs you do not want?

well I have magic desktop, which I have never ever used, and also an e music download programme which was rubbish, but is sitting on my desktop annoying me :-)
