My nearly 11 year old ds would like to learn how to record and upload minecraft videos to YouTube

Is there an idiot's guide as to how to do this? Does he need any special equipment?

He has AS and his 11th birthday is coming up in two weeks! He doesn't know what he wants for his birthday and I thought perhaps helping him with video recording would be a good gift?

You'll probably need to download some software that lets you record your screen. You shouldn't need anything else.

CamStudio is one that I've used before. You'll probably want to play with the settings (like video format and sound recording options) to see what works best on your computer and for uploading to YouTube.

Summerhasloaded · 01/09/2013 13:18

Thanks Metal, will definitely look into that!

Arrrgghh, CamStudio is windows-only. I use a Mac.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Debut video software Might work assuming he's playing on computer not console?

My 11 and 6 year old boys are minecraft mad and love watching videos :)

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 01/09/2013 14:09

I've used fraps in the past but I just looked and that's windows only as well.

There's a list of possibly suitable software here - a few are for Mac.

My 10 yr old does this and has a little black box - I'll ask him what it's called when he gets back from golf Grin

AnythingNotEverything · 01/09/2013 14:14

My DS has a roxio game capture ... I think.

I understand very little, but he records CoD and mine craft and uploads to YouTube with it. I believe.

ShebaQueen · 01/09/2013 14:21

I'm reliably informed by my 12 year old that you need FRAPS. It is a free download, not sure if available for Mac though. Hope this helps Smile

ShebaQueen · 01/09/2013 14:22

Ooops sorry, took me so long to post that I crossed with Plenty

Ooh more replies. Ds plays minecraft on a Mac. I've managed to use QuickTime to do a screen capture, but there is no audio (game sounds). Ds has also said he would like to do a commentary and I have no idea how to go about this Blush.

I need help Flowers

My first thought was to ask my 13 yr old. We are now those adults that need help from kids to keep up with technology Grin

snice · 01/09/2013 14:53

Am watching this too as DS is obsessed with watching these videos and keeps asking me how he can do one

Summerhasloaded · 01/09/2013 20:08

Bump Smile

My DCs love watching minecraft on YouTube!

Is anyone willing to post or PM me their Dc's - ok, Ds's - you tube details so we can watch him? They have worked through Ant Venom's programmes, and are now watching a British guy who is funnier but has much worse language. I am convinced they will go back to school and inform their teachers that homework s**s.

Sorry for post hijack....

conorsrockers · 01/09/2013 21:57

My son said the one he has (Elgato?) is for Xbox - he says as he has a mac it will be much easier - just need to look for video capture programs - apparently there are loads of free ones ...

Sorry - double post Shock

Summerhasloaded · 01/09/2013 22:13

conorsrockers, please pass my thanks on to your ds Smile

I've spent some time googling and think I can get audio on QuickTime by clicking on a drop down box in the Start Recording box, and selecting Use the internal mic. I'll try that in the morning - fingers crossed it will work!

Don't know about ds but I'm learning a lot here Grin

Just need to find out how to include ds's commentary to the video now Smile. I think I need a USB mic?

Wagonwheels · 02/09/2013 07:58

Great thread, I'm learning lots here too which might help my DS to record and upload his endless FIFA 13 videos.....

I bought him a Hauppage HD PVR thingy but can't get it to work.... Does anyone have experience of it? Thanks :)

Summerhasloaded · 02/09/2013 09:02

Picturesinthefirelight Many children with ASD enjoy Minecraft, and there is a server caled Aucraft which was specially set up for dc on the spectrum.
