You need the IP address for the new router, should be on a sticker on the router.
Plug in router and turn on.
Look for the router name in your network connections and connect using the default password (also on the sticker). Or plug cable into network port on computer and connect that way.
Type IP address into your web browser and it will open your router settings. Change the router setting to suit your service, also ensure you set a password for your wifi in the settings or your network will be available to your neighbours to connect to.

Have you got the ADSL bit connecting? I think its PPPoE settings or something like that, where you enter in some details that it needs to connect.

Yes, it may need details, which could have come with the original router. I don't know what Virgin charges for broadband using a standard line (there are probably lots of other ISPs which could offer a competitive deal), nor what settings yours would need.

(Cindy34 - think it's usually PPPoA - certainly has been for most ISPs for the past 10 years... then again this is Virgin so could be different, like AOL used to be 7+ years ago).

I have got virgin cable, they supplied the router and i had to ring them to set it up if memory serves. May be worth ring them?

We have Virgin cable and replaced our router yesterday (Ipad upgrade needed a better router than the one supplied by virgin many moons ago)- bought a netgear one, plugged it in and it worked.... would ring virgin to make sure nothing needs setting up their end
