Moving iTunes library to a different device

My Mac book which I used to manage my iTunes library has died and so I need to transfer my library to a different device. My DH who is slightly more techy than me (not saying much) says I can't use my iPad for this - is he right?

In either case, how do I transfer my library?

I'm not a techie so can't help massively BUT is your library all iTunes Store downloads, or is some of it ripped from CD or even (whisper it) from an alternative digital music store? Cos when I transferred my iTunes library from one PC to another, the shitty iTunes software decided to just delete everything that wasn't iTunes Store in origin. Which was basically everything. Apparently this is a common problem. Good job I had a backup Hmm

Just wanted to warn you in case!

When I last upgraded my iPhone and synced it I lost all of my non-iTunes music. My iPad still has all of my music on it though which is one of the reasons why I want to use this to hold the library, in the hope that all of my music will transfer across next time I sync my iPhone.
