What apps do you like?

I just got a smartphone, it's not flash as I didn't want to spend a lot.
I just wondered what good apps people like?
I like being organized so I have a shopping list one and a calorie counter one.
any other good ideas? I'm not bothered about games tbh

Ah, guess you're asking what Android apps people like then.... :)

HotUKdeals (.com) has an app (and can send you a daily e-mail around noon, of items which have been most popular {or "hot" as they use a temperature gauge} ...

Everything from insurance deals to toys and clothes to food items, computers and gadgets, that individuals have spotted and consider good deals (though not all are, and sometimes a second or third person posts about the same thing - but that's rare as duplicates are generally wiped off the forum.

Also, TuneIn Radio which has a pretty comprehensive list of world radio stations including loads {I'd be surprised if not all} from the UK. Worth the 75p (or whatever) for the Pro version in case you want to record a phone-in.

I also use SlideIt which is a different keyboard to the default. Worth a try and no need to keep it, but again I felt it was worth buying. Once bought for one Android device, using your same GMail account you can install on other devices too (so I have some apps on my other mobiles plus Archos 7" tablet, and a TV device - it's Android in a small 'chunky matchbox' size unit that plugs into TV on HDMI port and has wireless built in... so more of a tablet than a phone, but not touch screen so need a USB mouse).

TVGuide and TV Catchup (the latter isn't for previously broadcast shows, but "live" stations, so is badly named)

I use google keep a lot, really simple note keeping app.

I use WAZE for road navigation. It is a crowd sourced traffic app, so users can mark where accidents are, where traffic jams are, and the app knows typical speed for roads so will highlight when users are driving on roads at a lot lower speed than usual. Good as a general SatNav and made better with the live traffic data. It is Free.

ViewRanger - OS Explorer and Landranger maps on your mobile. Handy if you are a walker. You download map squares. It costs, though there is a free trail.

HistoryErazer - useful for clearing app cache. My phone is low on memory, so clearing out things not being used is useful.

Swiss Army Knife, Night Sky, BBC news and Mumsnet (of course).

Oh and Cleansweep is useful too.

Have to ask, HS, if the MN app shows the text when you are posting ?

I've found the fact there are some smileys (and something to do with the character set) means that the text box isn't in view, and when it is, what I'm typing is half visible (as if the characters are only showing about 50% or less.

I cannot use it to post anything so don't bother (I use the Dolphin browser which seems to cope OK with MN website, though have to admit I do much more typing on the iMac, perhaps because mostly my posts are verbose! rather than one-liners) :)

Whatsapp is my favourite app as I can see pics of the children to my husband during the day for free.

Also quite a lot of friends are now using it so my monthly bill has decreased quite a bit as messaging is free (or 99p per year - I think, either that or 69p can't remember).

Shame that WhatsApp needs a mobile number (so cannot work from a tablet or some other devices where photos / documents etc may be stored). Doesn't sending an e-mail work just as well? I can add photos etc into an e-mail and everyone with an Android device needs a GMail a/c. (Though I quite understand that WhatsApp is cross platform, e-mail is standard and also free...)

Evernote, YNAB, Any.DO, BBC News, Dropbox, Google Drive, Doit.im, Wunderlist (I have a few task management apps as I haven't decided which one to use), Drawing Pad, Kindle, Voxer.

Voxer I do find genuinely useful as a replacement for phone calls. It's like a walkie talkie except all you're actually doing is sending small audio files (of you talking) between groups of people. So if I want to ask DH something I can send him a Vox and he can pick it up either immediately (in which case we might then have a phone call) or he can reply whenever's convenient. It does text and photo as well. It's also great for communicating with dc who are too young to have a phone but trusted with a tablet or similar :)

Yes, it's good fun and very silly. But also very useful in that it acts like texting only with voice.
