Do you need to plug in an aerial to get Freeview?

Forgive me if that's a daft question, but I assumed the digital signal was floating around in the ether and a Freeview TV would receive it. But do I still need to plug the old brown aerial cable in?

You might be able to use a freestanding table top aerial. We had one for the bedroom tv in our old flat as there was no aerial socket in that room. It was about £20 or something from John Lewis or Argos (I forget which!) and we had no problems getting free view channels with it. It will depend on signal strength in your area though.
