Dd2 has had a payg phone for a while but only recently started to use it now all of her friends are getting them. Yesterday she asked me to top her up and I put £5 on, I've put £10 in the past but its December and I want her to realise that money doesn't grow on trees. I'm cross to find that she's used it up already. Needless to say we've had words. I wonder if it would be better to put her on a monthly deal of £10 pr less per month but I don't want the hassle of having to check she hasn't gone over each month. Can you have a monthly allowance that just runs out once its been used up or shall we just stay with payg?

Teco do capped contracts. DS has one that costs ten pounds a month an anything more than that has to e paid as payg. He's never gone over though as it includes 5000 texts and about 250 mins plus Internet.

Think Tesco are the only ones who guarantee a cap - the vodafone scheme does actually allow you to go over

tmobile do something called ufix

I've just signed dd up, it's £10 per month, she gets unlimited texts, unlimited internet, 30 minutes call time to non tmobile and 60mins to other tmobile phones

if she uses up her minutes she can buy a top up I haven't told her that but otherwise it will not allow you to go over

Contracts are much bette value, I would move her onto one and tell her she must pay the excess.

Be very careful to get in writing that you won't be liable if you go over.

Vodafone will let you go over, and it does say in the small print that it is meant to be a reminder service only and they take no responsibility if it fails.

To be honest if she can't be trusted with PAYG yet, I don't think she's ready for a contract. I'd tell her that you will consider getting her a contract with X free texts etc if she can control her usage.

Then I'd check she has the best PAYG sim card for her usage. Orange do some good ones for frequent testers.

Some good points, I think another month or two on payg might be in order and then a contract if she proves herself.

DS1 has a sim only contract with 3 (well, i have a contract with 3, ykwim) which is £6.90pm, 500GB data and too many texts and minutes for me to remember. He can't go over his limit, and I'm pretty sure he can't do anything that costs money either (so picture messaging and buying games) I wouldn't have risked a contract if I couldn't have capped it, not because I don't trust him but accidents do happen.

Three will allow you to set a cap, as will Tesco as others have said. The other is Giffgaff

Right now I'd probably lean towards Tesco Mobile who are doing a stunning deal which beats even Giffgaff who usually are the cheapest.

Basically you can get 500 mins, 5000 texts and 1GB of data for £10 per month on a one month contract. So you are not signing up for anything long term. Cap it at a tenner for peace of mind. Details here

Giffgaff I also thoroughly recommend. But for £10 per month they offer 250 mins, unlimted text & 1GB data which is still damn good value but just not as good as Tesco.

My DD used to be on Paygo too but it is flipping expensive compared to a SIM only tariff so in the end I moved her.

Tesco have been fantastic for my teenager. It doesn't allow you to go over so they can't. As long as you specify the capped deal when signing up. Sim only capped is 10 pounds a month for unlimited texts, i think it is 200 mins ans 1 GB, also unlimted blackberry bbm/email.
