Upgraded my iPhone iOS and have lost everything

I am so bloody depressed about this. I have upgraded to version 6. I thought everything had backed up to my laptop. I have tried to restore the backup to my phone but I get an error message every time.

I have lost all my photos (of DD2 since she was born, Olympics opening ceremony, DD1 dancing etc.). I have lost my contacts, can't seem to get them from my yahoo mail account. Lost all my notes including DD1's Christmas wish list. Lost all text messages.

Can any one tell me how to import contacts from my yahoo account to my phone?

I though I had but when I plugged it back into the computer everything came back, except my contacts but photos and apps did

Do you use cloud? Are you sure your passwords are entered correctly? Have you rebooted the phone?

I have not been able to recover anything. I had not used iCloud. Fortunately I often send DH photos of the DCs by email so I am to get these back.
