Kindle Fire or other tablet?

DP has been sent away with work and he doesn't have a tv or anything so is extremely bored.

I want to get him something for Christmas that he can watch football/tv through Sky Go, facebook, youtube, lovefilm (or similar),iplayer 4od etc etc.

My friend that works in IT has recommended a good tablet for £150, he's researched and researched and is getting one himself when they're back in stock.

But just seen an ad for the Kindle Fire, didn't realise it did so much.

So what to do? Budget around £150, or less if possible!

Sorry if this has been done 1000 times, coudn't see anything in this topic.

Personally I'd say shy away from the Kindle fire. Reason being is that it is extremely tied into Amazon. So you have to get your apps through them, movies, music.

I'd recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Right now it's £158 but if you buy a case (cheapest is £13) then you can get £50 cashback and an additional 8GB SD card.

This is a 'proper' Android tablet meaning you can get your apps from Google and other places.

Silly question....does your DP have a laptop with him? Where he's staying, does he have wifi? Even if he only has a smartphone, check out the site TVCatchup. You can stream live TV from that site to his PC/tablet/phone.

Thank you.
He has his iPhone but its a bit small for looking at all evening, I wouldn't fancy it. I'm also feeling a bit guilty as I took him a tv but forgot the remote Blush and as he's working 7 days 12h shifts he can't get out to get one.
I'll look at that tablet, thank you.
If I got him the kindle I'd be extremely jealous as I only have the basic one!

Nexus 7. Or something nice by Samsung.

Kindle Fire is not "like a Kindle only better", it's "like a tablet only not as good".

Does he have wifi though? if he doesn't have wifi then he won't be able to surf using the tablet since they do not have 3G cards built in them.

And unless your DP is on a 'One' tariff with 3, he won't be able to tether either (ie. use his iphone to give his tablet Internet access).

Just a heads up, Sky Go is not yet available for most Android devices running ICS or higher. It's coming soon but don't expect to be able to use it straight away.

I'm still a bit confused on the whole tethering thing. Always was able to tether my previous Android devices for free, now networks are charging for this. However, my new contract doesn't include tethering but I'm able to do so still. What is that all about?
