iPod / iPad / tablet - 8 year old boy

Hi. I'd like some opinions on this please - the pros and cons of buying one, not all of these, for my 8 year old DS.

All this technology confuses me.

My opinion is that 8 is far too young but you will get lots of mumsnetters disagreeing with this .

We are about to buy our DS his first mobile phone (not even sure if it is a tablet - what does that mean ?) and he is at secondary school, Y7.
