Could someone please tell me the main differences between the new Ipad and Ipad 2? I'm looking for an 11 y.o. DS who loves making imovies and will use it for games and some work. I was thinking 16Gb would be sufficient - am I right? Thank you!
BTW Apple website has Black Friday sale on today only for most apple products.

New ipad has a better screen. That's pretty much it. Technically it's got a bigger battery and a faster CPU but those are offset by the power needed to drive the better screen.

And when I say it has a better screen I think if you stood them side by side, you'd struggle to see the difference. Both screens are amazing.

The new iPad also has a lightning connector (like on the iphone 5) and a faster processor, which might be useful if he's playing racing games.

We've all got IPad 2 s , I don't think the retina display is worth the difference in price . My DD has a 32 gb though so if you have the extra money it may be worth getting that . I've got a 16 gb and its half full and I don't do movies/ photos / much music .

Thank you all - very useful. Now tell me about what sort of cover/stand is best please? Do I need a screen plastic sheet thing to protect it or is a cover the best bet? TIA.

We don't have screen protectors and ours are fine . The iPad covers are great and the poly ones are quite reasonable in the sale.

can i hijack this please? We have children aged 11 & 14, tough year financially and not a clue what to get for xmas. We were thinking of a tablet of some sort as a 'family' pressie but probably couldnt justify and ipad. Hower i;ve just spotted that tesco now have ipads that we can buy with our reward vouchers and we have enough vouchers for a 2nd generation but only with 16gb (they arent actually ofering the 32gb). It will be used predominantly as (I think) an 'expensive toy'. the kids will play on the apps and we will browse the net. Am a bit concerned about the storage not being enough? if they want to start puttiing films and music on it will get full quite quickly? Do Ipads have a usb port where you could plug in a hard drive if necessary? Thanks

Doilooklikeatourist · 24/11/2012 20:21

I just bought DH an iPad with 16 gb from Tesco , on 6 months interest free credit . I paid £60 deposit , then £56-50 each month for 6 months .
Don't know how long this offer lasts
Worth a look .

Floralnomad · 24/11/2012 20:38

No you can't plug in extra storage ,but 16 gb is quite a lot and you can always delete stuff as necessary

FoJo · 24/11/2012 20:47

thanks folks, it sounds like a good deal 'tourist' bit am quite keen on getting it 'free with my clubcard vouchers!! Flora I was wondering about films and stuff and things like bbc iplayer? It wouldnt be 3g so say if we wanted to download some stuff to watch while (say) on a long journey is that going to fill it up? Although i suppose we'd just delete it when watched (answering my own questions here!!). what sort of stuff do people actually store on ipads? we still have laptop for school work and so on

andadietcoke · 24/11/2012 22:59

A standard definition film is about 1.5gb. The operating system takes up a few gb as well, so your available storage won't be 16gb. On I player there's an option when you download stuff for it to be in lower quality and therefore using less space. Mine is 32gb but I rely on it for long haul flights/holidays where I won't be able to change the content. If it's just for road trips etc then 16gb would be fine I think.
