How do I recover my previous calendar entries on my iPad.

All my entires and appointments from last month and previous to that have disappeared. I need to refer back to dates for work and don't know how to retrieve them.
Do I need to back them up, I thought that's what iCloud did.
Hope someone can help.

Go to Settings then Mail, contacts and Calendars then scroll down to the Calendars section and where is says Sync change it to All Events
