Q-base disaster!! Is recovering files possible?

A whole bunch of music files have been lost from a friend's computer. He runs a studio, but is an absolute technophobe so has an engineer who does the computer based stuff. They had a work experience chap on today. Apparently, they needed to free up some space so they deleted a folder which had been finished with.

Unfortunately, at the same time a bunch of current files somehow went with it (using a shared template or so etching, so they were linked to files in the folder?). Even worse, the wastebasket was empty when they were going to recover the files, which was immediately.

They have the usual engineer trying to work remotely (he's on holiday!) to recovery the files using a recovery programme.

Does anyone know anything about this? DH is very glum, as a load of his recently recorded stuff went too, and he still needs to do overdubs and mixing.... He says once your basket's been emptied you're out of luck, and the possibility of recovery is a myth.

Quite, Natasha. I couldn't believe they didn't have backups of absolutely everything! It's because our friend is such a technophobe (he probably can't even plug in a USB) and the real engineer is on hol. For all I know they have got some sort of external back-up system but it hasn't been maintained while the engineer's away.
