do all ipods have the same connector bits?

As you can see from my subject link I'm hugely technically minded...

Anyhow - I want an ipod I can use on my stereo - it has a docking bit. But do all the ipods have the same connectors? I remember reading somewhere that the newer ones don't play on some of the older docks - is that correct?

I'm probably just going for a classic ipod as no real need for anything else...

All the current ipod range have the same connectors,dd has the latest ipod touch and it is the same as her old one,it will be the next release that will change as I believe they have to follow an EU ruling that all devices have to be able to use the same charger.

so if I buy the latest ipod classic (6th generation) it should fit a hifi dock that works on earlier generations?
