I have a dell computer - I need a new cable, is Dell the only place to get it from?

Or can I buy an unbranded cheaper version safely?

it doesn't need the Dell name on it. There are reputable suppliers selling good quality cables (there are also other vendors)

Which cable is it?

Trills · 29/07/2012 09:58

What kind of cable is it?

Most cable-type things that you would want to do with your computer are the same no matter what brand of computer it is.

The one that goes to the black box thingie that goes to the plug Smile

When I needed a replacement power cable for my Dell I got it from Amazon. You can type in the model number to make sure you're getting the right thing.

Trills · 29/07/2012 10:04

Oooh, now of all the cables that there are, that's the one that might be specific to your computer.

Try typing the full name of your computer (e.g. Dell XPS 7560i, or whatever) and "power cable" into Amazon. It might be cheaper than Dell. But you do need the specific one.

KatyMac · 29/07/2012 10:04

Is that the numbers on the computer rather than the numbers on the cable?

Trills · 29/07/2012 10:06

IT'll probably be numbers and letters on your computer, yes.

I have a Samsung and mine has some letters on the bottom right of the bit around my screen.

Get thee to a Maplins shop

KatyMac · 29/07/2012 10:08

so this would be OK?

rather than this?

Lucyellensmum99 · 29/07/2012 10:09

Definately second Maplins, will save you a fortune!!!!

Trills · 29/07/2012 10:10

A hundred and thirty quid?! They are avin a laff.

KatyMac · 29/07/2012 10:11

I was a little disconcerted tbh

Lucyellensmum99 · 29/07/2012 10:12

or do what we do, these things are always breaking, its usually the bit the plugs into the lap top gets a broken wire, solder it back together and buy an adaptor from maplins and clip it on tape it back together

Trills · 29/07/2012 10:12

How about this?

KatyMac · 29/07/2012 10:13

Well I think I'd be up for £30....rather than electrocuting myself Grin

Trills remember I am a bit of a technophobe & don't be offended & would one that cheap be safe?

OP posts:
Trills · 29/07/2012 10:18

It says Dell on the black box, so should be as safe as any other... probably imported from Hong Kong or something.

Or take your existing cable to Maplins and say "I want one like this please".

KatyMac · 29/07/2012 10:19
Grin

I'll try Amazon & you so kindly found it for me

OP posts:
Trills · 29/07/2012 10:26

This one has 4 reviews and they are all nice, and it's "fulfilled by Amazon" so the seller is less likely to be dodgy - it includes the bit that goes between the black box and the wall as well.

PigletJohn · 29/07/2012 10:26

do you mean the cable or do you mean the power adaptor??????

KatyMac · 29/07/2012 10:29

The bit that goes into the computer

OP posts:
Trills · 29/07/2012 11:28

Generally the bit that goes into the computer is attached to the black box, and this is specific to your computer (or to a group of similar computers).

The bit that goes from the black box to the wall plug is separate (and that's a generic thing, they are basically all the same)

KatyMac · 29/07/2012 11:36

Well it's all ordered
Thanks everyone

NetworkGuy · 29/07/2012 19:28

"they are basically all the same"

two main types -

(a) standard mains cable (with connector similar to an electric kettle)

(b) three circular pins (bit like a Mickey Mouse : head + 2 ears)

Not interchangeable, but they're pretty cheap - spend at most 2-3 pounds for a mains cable (probably online, Maplin might charge 5, 10 or more quid)

mains transformer and connection to laptop - very variable in price but would pay nearer 20 than 120 any day - yes, Dell having a sick joke, even though it may cover cost of next day delivery to central Europe for "free" at that ultra-high price - just less of a massive profit for them if it costs 20-30 quid anyway (and in numbers they would have ordered, maybe less than 20 quid).

we got replacement laptop chargers from here
