Geeky stuff

Oh my gosh. I have been given an iPad. Can you help me kit it out?

Shock and :o

My insanely generous friend, who gives away all his tech when he upgrades, has given me his old iPad 1. I say 'old' but TBH it looks brand new as he has no sticky-fingered children is very particular about looking after his gadgets. So it should last a good long time.

No way we could've bought our own one even second hand so we don't have much money to do stuff with it. Definitely needs a case (5yo and nearly 3yo at home) and I guess just some games really. I have an iPhone (which he gave me 2 years ago) and he's shown me how to get the iPad-friendly games from there.

Any recommendations for a low budget would be greatly appreciated. :)

Go on the app store, there are loads of free apps to kit it out. I never buy apps!

Any particular ones you'd recommend? Especially ones that are iPad only as I won't have seen them before. I get a lot of free apps on my phone and then just delete the ones that disappoint. Although I rarely delete them in practise so I had a really cluttered phone Blush

What I also forgot to mention is I'd really like some apps especially for DD (5) for phonics/numeracy etc. I have been a bit disappointed in the iPhone ones.

Go to app store and look in each section

We like the game
Flow
Dexterity is good for fine motor kills

Lifehacker (really good geeky website) just posted it's list of must-have ipad apps. You can find it here: lifehacker.com/5925527/lifehacker-pack-for-ipad-our-list-of-the-best-ipad-apps?tag=downloads

IMHO, the most important one is Prey panel.preyproject.com/devices which helps you locate your devices if they're lost or stolen.

For the kids, Toca Boca are good. Also Pocket Phonic is brilliant.

That's great thank you.

I had flow (free version) on my phone but having added it to the iPad it is I much better!

Do any of you have a stylus? My friend has a cosmonaut one which is lovely but £20, if you know any decent cheaper ones that'd be good :)

Tried a few free puzzle things tonight with DH, I am determined to be better at deleting stuff though :o

I use a Boxwave stylus which is usually about £7 from Amazon, but I see there's a newer version with a fabric tip, which may be a bit more durable. make sure you get a capacative stylus, as the other kind doesn't work on the iPad.

Here's a possible case:

Or eBay might be gooD as it is an older model?

I got a case which is a stand one?
Off eBay pretty cheap and it's nice and sturdy
I love song pop and gardens of time, never pay for apps!

Machinarium is good, not free as far as I know, but excellent.
