Geeky stuff

Puzzled and slightly freaked, twice now I have dialled a phone number and got through to different number

A few weeks ago I dialled a local phone number, say 56789, and got through to a number in a different dialling code, which bears no resemblance to the number I have dialled.

Today, I dialled that local number again, and the same thing happened. The number I reached is for an organisation I know.

Neither number is on my contact list, so I can't have accidentally pressed the wrong contact.

I hope I'm making sense, and someone can explain why this has happened.

Presumably the local number is forwarded? Were you calling it from a mobile? If yes, did you have the STD code on it?

Have you tried calling it from a landline to see if the same thing happens?

I had a problem for a while where I was dialling a number, say 123 but was getting through to 124. It was using my landline and it said 123 on the screen but the person who answered was 124. I bought a new phone and it never happened again but I did find out that there had been some problems with the phone lines in the area I was phoning. Maybe you should report the problem to your phone company.

I was using my landline and manually typed in the digits 56789, and got through to 12345 987654.

The first number belongs to a friend who lives a few doors away, and the second for an organisation about 30 minutes drive away.

This happened TWICE :O

Thank you tribpot and tacal for responding. I guess this is one of those mysteries that will never be solved Confused

That's so weird, and your friend is (obviously) certain he/she hasn't forwarded the phone number? Have they received other calls okay? Is it possible the organisation used to have a very similar number and a forward to the current number was set up incorrectly?

I want you to dial it again so you can see what happens Grin (but you probably don't want to run up connection charges just experimenting with the Phone Mystery).
