Hard drive keeps ejecting itself on MacBook

Hi, I'm having problems backing up my MacBook. It used to work fine but recently it's takes ages for Time Machine to find the external hard drive and then when it does and starts to back up it spontaneously ejects again and the warning box pops up. I've tried google and this seems to be a common problem but I don't really understand any of the solutions! The hard drive is plugged directly into the wall and I've changed the energy settings so the hard drive doesn't go to sleep.

What else can I try? The hard drive may have got damaged in a small child incident... might I need a new cable? Or a new hard drive? I hope not the later - it's fairly new and was quite expensive!

TIA
