iPod nano and iTunes problem. Help!

Basically, I don't even know what I want to ask!
Our computer crashed recently, the hard drive had to be wiped. On top of this my daughter's iPod nano broke and we are getting a replacement. I need to somehow transfer the stuff from her old nano to the new one.
I have also just downloaded iTunes onto our computer again, and it is empty.

What do I do now? I don't know where to start, and reading the bloody complicated apple help forums doesnt help either.

I admit that I am completely and utterly defeated and should not be let anywhere near electrical items. Help, please!
I am

Can you plug the old nano into your pc?

Your hard disk got wiped so the iTunes tracks that were on your PC are gone. Your Nano broke so presumably you can't sync the tracks that were on the Nano back onto the replacement hard disk.

If the above is a correct summary of your situation then your music library is gone. Or am I missing something?

the tracks in the library, were they bought from itunes or were they imported from CDs? If they had been bought from iTunes, if you click on 'Purchased' on the left hand menu of the iTunes software, you can re-download anything you bought.

There is a way to retrieve the content from the old nano, if it still connects to the computer but it will require some additional software. If the old nano is completely broken, you are stuck, if the music was from CDs it may be easier to just rip them all again.

Luckily my dh isn't quite as clueless as I am and backed up the pc at some point! So it's nearly all there, just a few of our newest cds missing, phew.
All I had to do now was transfer my daughter's old playlist to the new nano, done!
