How on Earth do I convert MS word docs to Open Office?

Confused

I have a 'new' (second hand) laptop which doesn't have MS word. It has Open office instead. The shop that sold the laptop to me has transferred all of my files over but the ones which are written in MS word (Home and Student I think) won't load on the new laptop. Is there something that I can use to convert them? Please? I've tried to upload a Microsoft trial but it just freezes the laptop and won't work.

Thank you :)

Hmm I think Open office should just open word files. I don't think you have to convert them. Could there be a different problem?

LadySybilDeChocolate · 05/05/2012 21:56

No. Some of the files are works word processor files, I think this is the problem.

Here's some stuff wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Writer/DocumentManagement/How_can_I_open_Microsoft_Works_wordprocessor_files_%28.wps%29%3F I think you need a converter. Although I think I have had a works file that I couldn't get to open at all.

Just remembered! Libreoffice. That's how I did it! Download that - it's also free.

As in open it in libreoffice, save as something compatible, then open in open office.

PS zamzar wouldn't open the one I was struggling with. It's all coming flooding back now.

Thank you :) Some of them will open, some of them won't. I'll try Libreoffice.
