best free internet security

I currently have Norton but it's due to run out in a few weeks. I don't want to pay out nearly £30 for a new one and wondered if free ones were actually any good. My laptop runs reeeaaaaalllllyyyyy slow and a few people have told Norton is the worst for slowing things down. Any advice?

We use Avira Free Anivirus. Our local computer repair shop recommended it. And we've actually had less trouble then we did when we had Norton. :)

I like avast. It just does its job with no fuss and very little slowing the machine down.

AVG. OH gets a computer magazine and they rate AVG Free more highly than many that you pay for. You also need a good firewall - Agnitum Outpost or Zone Alarm are good ones.

I use Mirosoft security essentials because it is less resource hogging than some of the others,I used to use AVG before it became bloated.

I used to use AVG and it worked brilliantly for a few years, but has gone downhill recently. I'm using Avira now and have no problems with it.

I use Avast and I like it, no noticeable performance hit and very unintrusive. Firewall wise I'm on Comodo which is excellent as well. I used to use Zonealarm but that gave me a lot of false positives and started affecting performance. I suspect that was probably a configuration problem on my part but I couldn't be bothered with it and switched.

I did have the Comodo firewall, but it gave too many false positives so switched back to Microsoft's own one. I have Avast free and Threatfire, neither of which slow down performance, and both of which update automatically.

Avast!

AVG was good, although they went off the boil a bit and bloated a little. Don't know if they've improved since.
