can you buy books from other sites for a Kindle, or are you stuck with Amazon?

I've downloaded lots of free books from other sites to my computer and then transferred them to my kindle. I don't know about buying from other sites though.

Amazon use a non-standard file type for kindle to other ebook readers, presumably to ensure customers buy their books from Amazon. It's pretty easy to convert ebook formats to be able to read them on kindle, I've got a free application called Calibre, so I can download ebooks to my computer, open them in Calibre, plug my kindle into the computer and Calibre will convert them and send them to the kindle. Often you'll be converting from ePub to Mobi.

However some ebooks have DRM (digital rights manager) which can stop you from converting or copying them. it is possible to remove this but might not exactly be totally legal
