i keep following instructions given on enabling add ons, i need activeX for starters, and windows media player.

it went wrong previously and i paid someone to fix it, but before it went wrong i had lsot the sound and had lost the add ons.
but as i have partly fixed it myself. i dont want to have to pay someone to twiddle.
any one any simple advice/instructions for a technophobe like me on how to fix these issues.?

ActiveX should just be an option within Internet Explorer rather than something you add.

Trying this page and it should test it out:
www.pcpitstop.com/testax.asp

The web site doesn't mention the little "banner" that might appear near the top of the page on certain versions of IE asking if you want to download and run the control.

Windows Media Player usually comes with more recent versions of Windows but you can also download it from here:
windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/windows-media

What other "add ons" are you after?

slartybartfast · 23/12/2011 12:52

oh thanks, i dont know what add ons i am after, aside from the two i hve mentioned.
so you reckon i just download them?
will try.
thanks

can i download audio?

hmm ActiveX is nto supported apparently.

ActiveX should be supported on all the main versions of IE, it won't work in Chrome (well not as a default anyway, there might be some extension that supports it, just stick with IE though).

Are you using Internet Explorer and on that page is there a fairly subtle yellow banner near the top of the page that says something about "This website wants to install the following add-on"? Click on that and accept it and then you should be able to move forwards.

"so you reckon i just download them?"

Well if you've definitely not got MediaPlayer then just go ahead and download it from the link above.

slartybartfast · 23/12/2011 13:25

oh, no i haven't got a yellow banner , only add-ons disabled banner.

What happens if you click on that? Do you get any options?

You should also check that your security settings allow ActiveX controls (ActiveX is one of the worst things that Microsoft have ever unleashed upon the world and the default is often just to block it completely). Instructions for that are here:
help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/settings/settings-28.html

SOMEHOW or other i got my interent explorer without add ons disabled. yay.

however I have lost volume.
perhaps i should start another thread?

Why are you using Internet Explorer rather than Chrome... what in particular ActiveX for? Maybe knowing that would help diagnose where your problem is.

Lost volume - in what? Everything? If so, check for updates to your audio driver, or indeed that you have the right driver installed.

Which version of Internet Explorer have you installed?
