Help! O2 has charged for data usage when I was using a wifi connection. End of tether!

Can anyone help me? I am at the end of my tether with this.

I have a phone through work, O2 network, HTC Desire.

When I am at home it automatically connects to my Wifi box and I use it to mumsnet check work emails etc

It was all set up for me by our IT department.

I used it for 6 months, fine, then when the next months bill came in my data charges were mega high. But, the times I was using the data were times I was connected via wifi. At this point both connections were enabled, but it was definately using wfi - this was obvious because of the speed and that if the wifi dropped out the speed plummetted.

If I was paying I would have disputed the bill, but the firm just seemed to shrug and pay up. IT came and reset my phone, turned off the mobile internet connection and it was fine for about 3 months. Then it happened again.

Another snotty email about my data useage. But again, I was using wifi.

They seem to have no idea what to do now, other than don't use it.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you checked if the mobile network box is enabled?
Settings>wireless and networks>mobile network, that box should not be ticked. This will stop it connecting through your phone contract and will therefore only connect through wifi.

That's the thing, after the reset it was not enabled as default and I only switched it on if away from the house, in a n urgent situation - so train times etc and then I always switch the connection straight off.

It was definitely switched off at the time they are charging, but I have no way of proving that!

This happened to DH, although admittedly it was when he was abroad in a hotel. He had data roaming off but they said tere was some sort of glitch which meant that if the wifi connection wasnt very good it connected through 3G. Which of course, should be impossible.Xmas Confused. They said to turn off cellular data in settings, not just data roaming and this fixed it, but it's a pain if you have to remember to do this at home. They did refund his charges but he had to argue.

Coming late to this. Hope op sees reply.

I had / have high data use on my iPhone. The data is added to my bill usually at midmpnight when the phone is either off or firmly connected to wifi. O2 say this is a random time when networks are quiet etc and this is when the data previously used is updated. It may not even be that days data. Sounds lie a piss poor excuse ( sorry!) but seems to be all I could get out if O2. Turn the phone off at night anyway to be safe incase your waif " goes to sleep".

You say it was all ok for 6 months then the bills got big - same here- r
From spring 2011 on - think iirc correctly the data on my contract was unlimited to start with as a " promotion" then locked down. Very annoying!
