This may sound like a stupid question but... NOT using the internet on your mobile when abroad

I'm asking on behalf of my DH.

He's completely paranoid that he will be charged for some reason for internet usage whilst abroad (he's in USA) even though he doesnt use the internet on his phone (even in the UK although he has a certain amount for free if he knew how to get to it)

I've told him that if he doesnt use it, he wont be charged for it being accessible to him. He thinks that just having it available to him is chargeable but as far as I'm aware theres no set charge for the facility (tesco mobile) - its purely based on the usage.

He has got roaming enabled, but as far as I'm aware a call is just that, a call - its nothing to do with data usage. He doesnt believe me.

Please tell me he shouldnt be fretting about this?!!

He needs to disable roaming - that's the advice given by phone networks. That way there's no risk to him of opening the internet by mistake.

If he finds a free wifi, he can connect via that at no charge.

What phone does he have?

lynniep · 06/12/2011 14:00

thanks for that. I went to tesco at lunchtime and he said what you said ST. He will have no idea to disable roaming, which presumably means we havent enabled it either. Its an old phone - a Nokia P910

Are you sure it's a Nokia? I thought the P910 was a Sony Ericsson phone. And if it is, then blimey that is old!

you are entirely correct it is a sony ericsson! and yes, it is old LOL. I stole his HTC Wildfire when he got it on contract, because he basically uses it for phone calls now and then (to me only) and the odd text message - nothing else. When he said he got free data with his contract I dug that phone out of the cupboard because the screen is reasonable for internet, but he never uses it, so its kind of irrelevant. However due to the size of the thing he isnt losing it quite so often as its difficult to miss!!
