keep getting a message on my laptop saying virus protection is switched off but it isn't

i am not very good with tech stuff! I keep getting a warning message on my laptop saying virus protection is switched off but when I go to my norton account it says 'secure' and the virus protection is on. Why does this warning keep coming up? Usually if i log off and turn the laptop off the message has gone when i turn it on again. It's very annoying but don't want to keep ignoring it if there really is a problem.

there is a virus that does exactly this.....hold on, I'll find details....

or...could apparently be that you have not updated virus definitions/updates for a couple of days.

Thanks for that, have just checked for new updates and it says there is a new one available so just downloading that now. Fingers crossed it works!

Thank you for posting this..... a good bit of advice and I will store it in my head.

I had the same problem today with ds's netbook. Then discovered that there were new updates to be installed and problem sorted. Made me realise that I need to check ds's computer more frequently!

I thought it automatically updated itself, i didn't realise i had to check it!
