Using an iPhone 3 as an iPod Touch?

DH is upgrading, we could trade in his old 3 (not 3gs) but then thought it would probably make sense to hang on to it for the kids - mostly dd, who will be 9 soon. I think that removing the sim means it will basically be an iPod touch, but I am not sure if there's anything else that we need to do?

It will sit on a charging dock in her room so she can use it for music, and play games on it/maybe take photos. We'll clear his apps off and make it just games mostly.

Security - my preference would be that we would just disable wireless access really, then enable to download new games if necessary. Will that affect playability though? If we have to leave wireless access are there any parental security apps anyone can recommend?

Thanks!

We have done this and turned off safari, mail, youtube etc but left internet access on to make downloading of games easier (but not told ds2 the password!). Be aware though that taking the SIM out doesn't prevent emergency calls and the emergency call button is accessible from the unlock screen.

We got around accidental calling of emergency services by sticking it on airplane mode (but leaving wifi on) and he is on strict, pain-of-death instructions NOT to ever take it out of airplane mode (and explained why). It's a pain that you can't lock airplane mode setting though as you can lock down other child-proofing settings.

Oh, for our older ds1 (aged 10), we took off Safari but installed mobicip which is a filtered browser. It also emails you weekly reports of what your child has viewed on the internet.

Thanks - some great tips there, I had forgotten about the emergency call thing. Airplane mode sounds like a good fix for that. I had come across mobicip, good to have a t&t recommendation. Smile
