What can a PS3 actually do?

Sucked in by TV advertising, my boys (12 and 8) have asked for a wii for Christmas. (We are also the only people they know apart from Granny who doesn't own a wii, which makes us miserable parents apparently Grin)

DH said he would rather buy a PS3 (boys already have a PS2 each) because it does more.

What more does it do, apart from playing blue ray DVDs?

I definitely wouldn't buy a Wii. Once you get over the initial cuteness of being able to wave your arms around to control it, it's really rubbish. See Michael Mcintyre's routine on the Wii to see what I mean.

As for PS3, it's arguably the best console out there. Certainly for your eldest who will soon be a teenager, it will be a better bet for him longer term.

Essentially a PS3 is a games machine so it pretty much just does it. And it does it very very well.

However, I'd have to say that you may be better off with a Xbox 360. The reason being is you can get virtually the same games on that as the PS3. In addition you can get Kinect which I think is way cooler than the Wii and/or Playstation Move. The downside is you wouldn't be able to play blu ray disks.

Thank you, but I'm even more confused now! Grin I've heard Xboxes break a lot, which has put me off.

DH says we will be able to watch internet on the TVwith a PS3, without buying an internet TV, which is why need to get the 320GB one. Is this true?

We have both. The kids prefer the PS3

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 06/11/2011 16:54

yes, you can get iplayer and the like on the ps3, if you have sky you can it get through the xbox. Xbox you pay a small fee to game online, ps3 you don't. We have both, the dcs have an xbox, dh has a ps3. You can get breakage insurance on the consoles if you want it.

We have a PS3 - don't use it much for games. The kids do a bit and we have the move stuff which is good. The best thing about the PS3 for us is that we use it as a media server so we keep all our movies/music/photos on a server in the office which links to the PS3 so no need for DVDs anymore (we just buy our films, etc on the net and download them). Have a look on google for 'PS3 media server'. I think you can use X360 to do this too but not sure if it is as good.

My kids like online gaming with friends, I guess they use the PS3 as that's what their friends have

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 06/11/2011 17:03

oh and ours is 250gb ps3 and iplayer works fine.

mumatron · 06/11/2011 17:04

What does a ps3 do? You mean apart from take over your dh"s life? Grin

we have a wii, xbox and a ps3.

Xbox hardly ever gets touched, even with the kinnect.

Ps3 is most popular by far.

acsec · 06/11/2011 17:10

We have Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3. The Wii only gets played when we have DSS aged 7 or I particularly feel like playing Lego Pirates.

Xbox 360 is broken (3rd one DP has owned in the 4yrs we've been together). Annoying as I was loving Alice: Madness Returns.

The PS3 is fab! It's a Blu Ray player, you can watch iplayer, ITV player and 4 On Demand on it. You also don't need to pay to go online with it. Get the PS3.

LynetteScavo · 06/11/2011 21:06

A PS3 it is then.

Do I really need the 320GB one?

We have a PS3. We bought play tv and also use it as a hard drive recorder. We added extra memory to ours too. It's works like sky+ I think.

acsec · 06/11/2011 21:27

ours is 250gb and DP says and I quote "unless you are rich and are going to be downloading loads of movies and stuff then you won't need more than 250gb".
