iPad and facebook chat

I've recently got an iPad which I absolutely love but am a bit foxed by Facebook chat which I use a lot. How can I see if my friends are online and can they see if I'm online? It seems to default to my messages inbox and the chat box at the bottom of the screen doesn't automatically pop up.

Any ideas?

I had the same problem, if you are accessing fb through safari then it will not work, you have to download the fb chat app and go into fb through this.

Sorry posted before I had finished. The fb app is basically the same one as you would get on a smart phone. I tend to open fb in safari so it's the proper fb page and then have the app for times I need to chat. On the app you have to click on the top left box of squares.

Facebook chat is a bit hit & miss at the moment. I don't use it much but my daughter used another app for it which seemed to do the trick. Can't remember the name but i'm sure if you look in app store, there'll be loads.

However, Facebook have released a Facebook Messenger application in the US and it's due very soon in the UK. I think that's more what you will want to use.

Basically it's their answer to BBM, iMessage and Whatsapp. I've got a copy on my phone and it seems to be working quite well. Well the one time I used it to test! lol

Thanks for the quick responses, as always I'm grateful to the MN IT help desk. I downloaded the MyPad app which is free which seemed OK this morning but now just won't load. Can't quite work out how friends can let me know they want to chat with me unless I sit there with the app open. Barbiegirl, how do you do it?

Nice guy, I couldn't find the Facebook messenger app in the Apps Store as I'm UK based. I've had a bit if a look through the apps store and there don't seem to be any that get particularly good reviews. What does your daughter use?

I'm a bit surprised that Facebook have built in the chat function for iPad users as it just seems so obvious. I'm quite a avid chat user as I'm stuck in on my own most evenings so would be a bit gutted if I couldn't get it to work.

I had a look and it's called Tap to Talk Facebook Chat 2. She seems happy with it. I don't really use FB Chat much but it looks ok. There's a free version and a paid one. We have the free installed.

Thanks nice guy, it's tap to chat and works brilliantly. Also in response to my earlier concern, it let's you know when you have a new chat message even if you're in the middle of something else. Great stuff, back in love with my iPad.
