iPhone 3GS , computer won't let me sync my phone, how will I transfer to a new one if I upgrade?

Help!
Safari isn't working on it so I went to sync & restore which usually fixes the problem but it says iTunes cannot read my phone.

Last time this happened I had to start a new account but since the old one is still on my laptop it takes quite a bit of memory.
I'm out of warranty & planning on upgrading soon as the battery is crap now too.

Help please on what to do!

Have you tried rebooting the phone? Ie. holding down power button and sliding bar to off. Then restarting?

Have you tried a different cable? I have one Apple cable which won't let me sync but charges the phone fine. No idea why.

Will try a different cable, dh suggested backing to his laptop ,but I'm wary of losing everything.
I did back up the pictures though
