Are iPads sim locked?

I can't find a definitive answer on t'interweb so I need someone with experience of swapping them around...

I have an o2 iPad 1. My dad is offering to swap for his Vodafone iPad 2 when he gets it. Am I going to be disappointed and cry a lot?

Generally they are locked if you get them from the carrier but not if you bought them direct from say Apple store then plugged a SIM in.

Why don't you just pop your sim card in your dad's and see if it works before you agree to a swap?

He doesn't have it yet, he's not that fussed about getting one but will if he can swap it. Mine came from PC World , his will come from Vodafone as it's through his work contract. And there is where i suspect the problem will be...

Yours won't be locked but the Voda one probably will be.

Of course, I've just realised that it doesn't make a blind bit of difference I'm thinking like a phone with phone numbers etc which doesn't apply. He's gone ahead and got it and we're just going to swap, sim cards and all. We're both signed up to the same sort of deal so it makes no difference.

It's a good job the iPad doesn't have voice features built in, else his work would be trying the Vodafone number to contact him and be ringing you all the time!

Am interested to know what sort of deal (data allowance) these two mega firms are offering, if you have time to post, please.... (mostly curiosity, as I get 15 GB of data from Three for 8 quid a month, using a USB modem).
