AVG making Facebook impossibly slowwwww

I have AVG free edition on my netbook.

I've recently updated the software and it's made Facebook virtually unusable - it's painfully slow and keeps freezing.

I have tried un-installing the AVG (Facebook then runs fine) and then re-installed again. It's as bad as ever.

It's only Facebook btw, everything else seems fine Confused

Any ideas?

TIA

Log onto facebook and change the security settings to using HTTPS for browsing and this should fix it. :)

Thanks wmmc but it's still not working right :(

Being nosy, what browser do you use ? I think AVG now, by default, includes link checking which may mean that it slows down considerably if you are viewing pages full of links (each other Facebook friend 'image' etc will probably represent a link, so if every one of those links is being loaded/checked, it may be the reason.

On Firefox, there's an 'AVG Safe Search' add-on. Clearly it is there for safety but you could test disabling it, see if Facebook is back to usable, and if so, you know you've identified what's causing problem, and then consider re-enabling the add-on in FF and using another web browser for Facebook only so the AVG check isn't active. It does put your machine at a slight risk but that's a decision for you to make if Facebook is being made unusable and you take care when clicking any links found /seen while using Facebook.

I'm using Internet Explorer.

I did use Firefox at one time, but went back to IE and uninstalled Firefox as it made my netbook really slow.

The checking links thing makes total sense.

Are there any other browsers that you'd recommend?

Have you tried Opera? Its quite light on resources and is supposedly safer than IE for internet security. I used AVG for years until last year decided to uninstall it because its newer updates at the time seem to make my PC run super slow. Eventually PC crashed. Twice. Uninstalled AVG and never had a problem with crashing again... I still don't know exactly why though... from the error messages I got, there seemed to be some kind of incompatibility with my new monitor and its device driver... not a techie so I don't think I ever will understand! :)

What apps do you have running on Facebook, it may be that one of these is the cause of your problem because if it's tracking your activities AVG will try and stop it.

No, I haven't tried opera - I'll give it a go, thanks.

I have no ideas what apps I'm running wmmc. I'm not very clued up on this, am I?! Doh.

Personally I would dump AVG and go with one of the other free AV,s,I used it for years but tried Microsoft Security Essentials on my new laptop and was so pleased with it that I took AVG off the other PC,s amd installed it on them as well.

I already had google chrome loaded on my notebook so I've tried fb through that instead - it worked!

Thanks all :)

Okay on Facebook, go to ACCOUNT, PRIVACY SETTINGS, then look in the bottom left for the Apps bit and see what you have. And remove any that may be making it go slow. :) It may be a browser interaction prob with the app rather than the AV.
