Mobile with "liquid ingress"

A few weeks ago DS1 left his mobile at a friend's house. Outside. It rained a bit that night so obviously phone wouldn't work. Took it apart and put it in the airing cupboard for about a week. Screen still didn't work although some of the buttons worked.

Took it to Carphone Warehouse who sent it off for repair under guarantee. Can't be repaired due to "liquid ingress" and isn't covered under warranty.

Anyway I've found a few sites that say they can repair water damaged phones but wondered whether anyone has any recommendations/ideas/experience re this kind of repair. I think we're beyond the bag of rice idea.

It's an LG touch phone - quite a basic one. Cost about £40 last October.

To be honest I really doubt it would be worth it for a £40 phone. You are better off just biting the bullet & getting a new one.

They'd probably charge you more than £40 labour to replace the screen, before any parts. That's assuming nothing else was damaged.

BTW, how old is your son? If I were you, I'd buy him one of these: Samsung e1080 for a tenner. A basic phone you can get in touch with him with and if he wants something better, he can pay for it himself or prove he can look after it.

That's the one my DS has and he's nearly 10. If he loses it, stands on it, breaks it. I won't really care. The phone is unlocked so you can just take out the Orange SIM and replace with your son's SIM to keep the same number. I just use the Orange SIM occasionally for the 2 for 1 Orange Wednesday films. Result!

Thanks for that. I was leaning towards just getting him a cheap replacement to be honest but thought it would be worth asking.

The phone was a birthday present for DS1's 9th birthday last October - I know, I know a £40 phone for a 9 year old, etc but it was a last minute decision for his main present. DH wanted to get him a full Man Utd kit but, to me, they're vastly overpriced. Sorry, not quite sure how I ended up going in that direction!

On a bright note, it's on Orange anyway so I'll look at the phone you've suggested.

Planned to post the other day but cannot remember which PC I was using (at least 6 have MN pages on them in tabs on different browsers!)

Was going to suggest the Alcatel OT-255 at 4.90 from same online store (one of several run by Carphone Warehouse, I think). OT-255 has FM radio and QWERTY keys on front so looks similar to some Blackberrys

I know he needs to take care of phone and 1p phone is OK to 'get by with' but at 4.90 this isn't a luxury model but has more than just text and voice call facilities, IYSWIM.

Too late (I assume)for your son, but one perhaps worth considering as a 'spare' if anyone else in the family has a mobile on Orange, given the low cost.

Just seen your post NetworkGuy. Thanks very much for your suggestions. I'll definitely look those up tomorrow. Haven't got him anything else yet.
