ds has been given a used laptop - Dell Inspiron 3000. Currently has Windows 95 and Office 97. I guess it will be fine for basic word processing etc and it does have a usb port for a memory stick. However would it be worth updating os and software ?

Personally i'd have to say it wouldn't be worth it.

XP needs at least 256MB of RAM to run at a reasonable speed. The processor is also ancient by computing standards.

It might be more useful with an up to date "light" Linux distribution.

I have a good impression of Vector Linux Light, however I haven't used it long term or on a laptop.

It claims to run on 64MB RAM, but the Inspiron 3000 might have as little as 48MB, so you should check the memory if you choose to experiment.
