Can you download images from the internet onto an IPad?

And if so, how?
We've bought an IPad for our autistic son and I'm trying to set up a photo library for him - friends and family, but also TV characters, famous people etc.
I've managed to download our family photos from the photo library on our PC but is there any way of copying from the internet - Google images for example?

If you google for the images, then open the full size image, if you touch it, you should get a menu saying Save image or Copy. If you save the image, you will find it in the 'saved images' folder in the Photos app.
