Although I have plugged the new device into the computer iTunes does not seem to be recognising it.

iTunes only works with Apple devices.

If your son's MP3 player is not made by Apple, you will not be able to use iTunes to load music onto it.

I have googled but some of them seem frankly dodgy! I don't want to get involved in anything illegal or have pop ups from gambling sites forthe rest of my life!

If you want legal sites then Amazon is prob one of the best.
