Microsoft Office Picturemanager. compressed photos by mistake. detail gone. can i get back ?

downloaded 50 photos onto our computer. deletes from camera instantly. I chose to compress 6 photos, instead of re-size them and chose the e-mail option.
But when i did e-mail it, they had gone from 2.87 mb to 13.2 kb.
when you open up the e-mail the photos are tiny. and when you zoom it all the detail disappears.

once i had done this to the photos i pressed save. save file.

is there ANYTHING i can do. dh says their rubbish and there is no way to get them back. but didn't my computer save an old copy of this file, all 60 photos before i started mucking about. will it not be in the history somewhere ?

is this a lost cause? i only wonder because i have made a big mistake here. and am really really cross with myself. these photos were evidence.

any suggestions ?

You can possibly recover them from the camera. When they are "deleted", they aren't really, or at least not usually- it's just that their records are deleted form the directory of the camera files. So by using undelete-type software on your camera, you might get them back in their original glory.

Obviously the details of how to do this depend on your computer and your camera, but in principle it might be possible.

If you want to do this don't take any more photos, for now.

oh thank you prism. will look into this.
there is no chance that the original photo is on my computer before i re-sized it, is there ?

Personally I think that's less likely, but I'm not familiar with MS Office Picturemanager (in fact I have never used it and don't have it)- does it have any kind of "revert" feature? I guess you've already looked for that, but sometimes graphic software stashes the original somewhere and you can get it back, but if so there should be a specific function for that in one of the menus.
